What is Task Achievement?

Task Achievement measures how fully and directly you answer the essay question in IELTS Writing Task 2.
To score highly, you must:

  • Address the specific task given, not just talk generally about the topic.

  • Cover every part of the question properly.

  • Clearly state your opinion and support it with developed ideas and examples where needed.

Examples of Strong and Weak Responses

Example Question:
Some people believe that newspapers are the best source of news. Others think newer forms of media are better.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.


Strong Response:
Many people argue that newspapers are the best way to stay informed because they offer detailed, well-researched articles. For instance, newspapers like The Guardian and The New York Times are trusted sources of in-depth reporting, which many readers feel provide a deeper understanding compared to shorter online updates.

Weak Response:
Some people think newspapers are good. Others think TV or the internet are better. Newspapers give a lot of information, but online news is quicker.


Why is the strong answer better?

  • It clearly discusses both views.

  • It gives a clear opinion.

  • It uses a specific, realistic example to support the point.


How to Improve Your Score

  • Answer exactly what the question asks β€” stay focused.

  • Cover every part of the question β€” don’t skip anything.

  • State your opinion clearly and explain it properly.

  • Support your ideas with clear explanations and realistic examples.


Final Reminder

IELTS examiners want clear, logical communication.
They are not testing your knowledge about the topic. Focus on answering the question fully, presenting your ideas clearly, and backing them up with solid reasoning.
