There is an opinion that all high school students should be required to do some type of unpaid community service as a part of their education. While I agree that such experiences can be extremely valuable, I do not believe it should be mandatory.
On one hand, voluntary work helps young people to develop important life skills and awareness of the society around them. For example, helping in a local shelter or assisting with sports can teach responsibility, teamwork, and communication. It can also increase their confidence and make them feel more involved with their community. These experiences are often useful later when applying for jobs or universities.
However, I disagree that this type of work should be forced. For some students, their academic schedule is already demanding. Adding compulsory community service could increase their stress or reduce the time they have for study, part-time jobs, or rest. Also, making it required might reduce the personal value of volunteering — people may only do it to tick a box, rather than with genuine interest. Additionally, some students may not have access to community programmes depending on where they live.
In conclusion, although unpaid service Change: does have clear advantages and should probably be encouraged, I believe it would be better if it remains optional. Students could be informed of the benefits and supported if they choose to participate, but they do not need to be forced into it as a formal requirement of school. Explanation: Added cautious language with phrases like “should probably” and “would be better” to align with Band 5.5 standards, moderating claims and acknowledging other possibilities.
