IELTS Writing Task 2 Coherence and Cohesion.
What is Coherence and Cohesion?
Coherence and Cohesion are about how well your ideas are organised and linked together in your essay.
The examiner looks at whether your writing is easy to follow, and whether your points connect logically from one to the next.
To score highly, you must:
Organise your ideas clearly and logically across paragraphs.
Use a range of linking words and cohesive devices naturally.
Make sure each paragraph flows smoothly to the next.
Overusing basic linking words like “and”, “but”, “also”, “firstly” can make your writing sound mechanical. Variety matters.
Examples of Strong and Weak Responses
Strong Response:
One major advantage of newspapers is the depth of reporting they offer. For instance, major publications often provide background information and analysis that help readers understand complex issues. Furthermore, readers can access detailed reports from trusted sources, making newspapers a reliable medium for in-depth news.
Weak Response:
Newspapers are good. They give lots of information. Also, people can read them every day. But online news is faster. Also, it’s easier to use. Newspapers are still important.
Why is the strong answer better?
Ideas are clearly connected and build logically.
A variety of cohesive devices (“for instance”, “furthermore”, “making”) is used naturally.
The argument flows smoothly across sentences.
How to Improve Your Score
Plan your essay structure before you start writing.
Use linking words carefully: “however”, “therefore”, “in contrast”, “for example”, “as a result”, “nevertheless”.
Avoid repeating the same linkers — variety shows flexibility.
Make sure each paragraph focuses on one clear idea, with logical progression.
Final Reminder
Good ideas won’t score well if they are not presented clearly.
Strong Coherence and Cohesion make your writing easy to understand and show the examiner that you can organise information effectively.
