IELTS Writing Task 2 – Vocabulary (Lexical Resource)

What is Lexical Resource?

Lexical Resource refers to the range and accuracy of your vocabulary in IELTS Writing Task 2.
Examiners assess whether you can use a wide variety of words naturally and appropriately to express your ideas.

To score highly, you must:

  • Use a range of precise vocabulary to convey meaning clearly.

  • Avoid repetition of basic words.

  • Use topic-specific words naturally without forcing them into the sentence.

  • Make sure spelling is accurate and collocations are correct.

Repeating simple words like “good”, “bad”, “big”, “small” can hurt your score. Aim to show flexibility in your word choice.

Examples of Strong and Weak Responses

Strong Response:
Newspapers remain a valuable source of information because they offer comprehensive coverage of important events. Many readers appreciate the in-depth reporting and critical analysis provided by established publications.

Weak Response:
Newspapers are good because they tell people about stuff happening. Some people think newspapers are better than other ways to know about news.

Why is the strong answer better?

  • It uses more precise vocabulary such as “comprehensive coverage”, “in-depth reporting”, and “critical analysis”.

  • The weak response relies on basic, vague words like “good” and “stuff”.

How to Improve Your Score

  • Learn synonyms for common IELTS topics (e.g., environment, education, technology).

  • Practise collocations (words that naturally go together, like “play a vital role”, “make a significant difference”).

  • Check spelling carefully, especially for less common words.

  • Use academic or semi-formal vocabulary naturally — don’t try to force difficult words into your essay.

Final Reminder

A wide range of vocabulary shows the examiner that you can express yourself clearly and accurately.
Focus on using precise, natural language rather than trying to impress with long or complicated words that do not fit the context.
